Do Not Mix Airsoft and Real Guns Together

Gungho Cowboy

The consequence for doing that would be life threatening. If you will consider this a lecture, then so be it. If you flaunt airsoft guns and much more together with real steel ones, then it's going to be an accident waiting to happen. Just like what happened to this young man who thought he can impress a girl with his guns. The problem with guns is that they are also considered as "phallic symbols", though some say it's just compensating for "shortcomings" like fast sports cars, and lots of bling.

Consider this incident that we have found online: A young man, named Jason Gilbert, got shot in the neck with a 9mm pistol by accident in Battle Creek, Michigan. According to BattleCreekEnquirer.com:

"Witnesses at a party told police Gilbert had shown people an airsoft pellet gun with an orange ring around the end of the barrel. But then Gilbert handed the woman what witnesses thought was the same gun and told her to shoot him. A shot sounded and Gilbert was wounded."

I can only speculate that Mr. Gilbert either made a mistake of thinking that what he handed over to the woman was still the airsoft gun, rather than a real 9mm pistol that still has a round left in the chamber, or not since the airsoft pistol has the distinct orange tip. He thought he had emptied the pistol by removing the magazine. But then, he forgot to check the chamber, a very basic safety requirement in handling guns, whether real steel or not.  And bringing two guns, one airsoft, one real, and cannot be easily distinguished from another a mistake can happen.

There are always safety precautions in handling guns. We are always taught that we should treat airsoft guns like real guns and here are some of the safety rules in handling guns:

  • Treat every gun as if it is loaded
  • Always point guns in a safe direction
  • Know your Target and Beyond
  • Do not shoot at anything you do not intend to kill or destroy
  • Never use a firearm if you have been drinking or using drugs

All of the above gone safety rules were violated. The guns were shown at a party, where there is a high possibility of alcohol being present, people getting more daring and reckless. Put guns in the mix, and it's a highly volatile situation. In this case, a young man fighting for his life in the intensive care unit.

We have read news or watched videos of young people shooting each other recklessly with airsoft guns that we just shake our heads in exasparation why these happen. But this incident in Michigan just takes the cake.

As one of the cardinal rules in airsoft game sites, no real firearms are allowed in countries where gun ownership is legal. As airsoft guns are hard to distinguish from the real ones, it's a dangerous thing to have these together as someone fire a real gun thinking it's a an airsoft  one. Even law enforcement and military training enforce colour codes to determine which are simunitions or live rounds to avoid mistakes of putting magazines with live rounds during simulations or exercises.

Violating any of the gun rules would cost anyone dearly, and it is always with the gun owner's or someone else's life.
