Final Day Report IWA 2013 & Outdoor Classics

Dom

The last day was the least crowded of all days so I took the opportunity and went back to the G&G booth where I had a chat with their engineer about the latest products, but mainly about the GEC System (G BOX). The G BOX is not simply a new split gearbox design. It has features what other systems won't offer. The most important feature is that the takedown won't require a tool other than a push-pin. Of course getting to the gears isn't that simple but you are able to reach the following components using the push-pin: micro switch assembly, spring, piston, motor, MOSFET. Imagine a Top-Tech pneumatic blowback V2 gearbox with a highly modified shell.

The guy in this video will show you the takedown:

Let's look at the other important features:

  1. The G BOX has color-coded internals
  2. G&G will offer standard, high ROF and high velocity versions
  3. No motor wires, the motor connects via a connectors which are integrated in the trigger guard and the gearbox shell
  4. Forward assist button will release spring tension
  5. Tapered sector gear to reduce wear on piston rack
  6. Active breaking controlled by a magnet on the sector gear instead of the optical solution of Systema

Now we just need someone who will do a well documented test of this gearbox.

G&G also released their WWII series: the M1 Garand (mid and hi-cap magazine version), and two versions of the 1903 Enfield. The interesting thing about the 1903 is that it uses 8g CO2 cartridge instead of a 12g what makes the logistics a bit easier and cheaper.

Also on display my personal favorite from G&G: the GK5C which is the replica of the Swedish Army rifle the AK5. Heavy like all previous FNC versions but remember what Boris said: The weight is the sign of reliability. Battery compartment is easy to get to, one of the remote tape switch cut out (the one on the left side of the handguard) acts as a lock for that half of the handguard panel. I would rather take this than any other AKs mostly because of the use of M4 mags.

Speaking of AKs: G&G fitted their new AK series (pneumatic blowback) with a handguard integrated battery, which connects to the gearbox or the desktop charging dock through a socket instead of connectors. Taking it off the rifle is easy and also tool less. AKs will come with two batteries and charging cradle by default and further batteries can be purchased with and without the wooden handguard part.

Other G&G goodies worth to mention: new mid-cap mag design (only desert and black) and steel reinforced AK magazines. The CNC made GBB M4 cut out is very interesting piece, and the display below that shows the manufacturing process. Still no working prototype at the show.

I went back to the Redwolf booth to see how the GIS Glock mag coupler handles. The reload deserves a lot of practice but I can see some advantages in CQB/IPSC environment. I hope RWA comes out with a demo video as soon as their shooters mastered this new accessory. This patented coupler from GIS have several different angles depending the version of your Glock or your under rail accessory.

Here's a treat for you guys at the end. After talking to Izmash representatives about their real steel guns they took an AK-74 off the shelf telling me that it is their airsoft rifle. It was pretty well hidden amongst the real versions. The one pictured has a CNC made hop-up chamber that I couldn't photograph. As soon as they figure out which gearbox they will use for this beauty then it will start ship to retailers. Needless to say how real these parts are.

Thanks for following me in the past few days, and I apologize for not being that thorough as I was last year, but during this show I had other tasks as well. I had to introduce some of our close friends into the world of the IWA show but next year we will try to bring you guys better coverage of real steel and tac gear manufacturers.
