Rugged Smartphones With Juggernaut Defense Cases

Gungho Cowboy

Ever wanted to use your big-screen smartphone of phablet (phone-tablet) in milsim exercises or large-scale airsoft games but you can't seem to use it as there's no protection for the big screen and have an expensive device get damaged by BBs? The Juggernaut.Case from Juggernaut Defense can do the job, but unfortunately, it's not available for the civilian market for now.

According to Soldier Systems, the Juggenaut.cases are also limited, as they're available only for the Samsung Galaxy Note and Motorola Atrix Series. And what makes them even more limited is that they are only being issued to special operations forces and conventional units. Well, if we're willing to wait for civilian versions of this after these units put the cases through the toughest tests, then there might be a possibility of getting these. But by then, newer models of smartphones and phablets are already out.

Soldier Systems says that:

These patented cases enable units to employ the ‘smartphone on the battlefield’ by ruggedizing the device within a shockproof/dustproof, IP-6X Case that contains an EMI-shielded USB connection to tactical radios through a sealed Glenair 80-series connector. By implementing features like the hands-free/flip-down armor mount and anti-glare etched chem-strengthened glass screen protector, users will be able to employ this ‘smartdevice technology’ running Android apps on the battlefield.

To put it more on layman's terms, the cases help the military save on costs as rather than develop ruggedized smartphones for military use that will entail resources given the way Defense R&D works which tend to go over budget and results in costly delays, the soldiers will be able to take Commercial-Off-The Shelf (COTS) smartphones and just use the Juggernaut.Cases which will provide the necessary protection for these devices and allow the operator to carry them into the harshest of operating environments.

With devices using flexible-displays not yet available for prime time since these are lighter and can be easily inserted in the map inserts on the sleeves of BDUs, smartphones will have to do the trick and they have enough processing power to crunch tactical information apart from doing basic communications and navigation functions. The private industry already has the products for such tactical needs that the military doesn't need to pursue the hardware part and just focus on the software needed to make full use of these for military and even law enforcement purposes.

We wish that this type of case is also available for airsoft use as there already applications that can be used for airsoft such as the FPS calculator, navigation, and especially the AirScan Mobile App which lets you coordinate your teammates in airsoft games using their GPS locations and setup airsoft matches.

For those who might want something similar to this and with cases for various smartphone models, it's just of waiting somebody else to manufacture for the airsoft market which seems to be ripe enough for a product like this.
