Tom Clancy's Main Character Returns In "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit"

Gungho Cowboy

The death of renowned Techno-Thriller writer, Tom Clancy, last 1st of October overshadowed the release of the trailer that is based on his most famous character. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" trailer went online last week which features, Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley,  and Kenneth Branagh (also the Director) working together for the first time in this movie which draws from the strength of one the most celebrated writers in this genre.

But before you run to Amazon or the nearest bookstore to find the "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" the movie is not a screen adaptation of any of the Jack Ryan novels of Tom Clancy. The movie is based on the  concept of screenwriter, Hossein Amini, based on the Jack Ryan Character which was played by the following actors in these Tom Clancy Novels:  Alec Baldwin ("The Hunt for Red October"), Harrison Ford ("Patriot Games" and "Clear & Present Danger"), and Ben Affleck ("The Sum of All Fears").

Shadow Recruit traces the roots of Jack Ryan, who was an accountant and a military history professor with a PhD, from his Marine Corps years, to being an operative of the CIA, and working to takedown a Russian billioniare. But watching the trailer, this movie will not be able to fill in the gaps of Jack Ryan in between the Tom Clancy Novels, and noting that the movie is now more contemporary and post cold war whilst Jack Ryan was more of a Cold War Warrior. If you go beyond the original Jack Ryan novels, it could have been better if they have based the character on Jack Junior, his son who became the main character in the "Teeth of the Tiger" up to "Command Authority" which will be released in December 2013.

We would be writing one more feature story about Tom Clancy, which I believe would be Optimus Prime's tribute to one of the authors who kept him awake during his uni and early career years. For now, we await for the full release of "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" to theatres worldwide on Christmas Day 2013.
