US Airsoft Industry Against California SB 798

Logan

It's not just only the California airsoft community that is revving up against California SB 798, but the whole US Airsoft Industry is now up in arms, not literally, against the proposed amendments to the Penal Code. In short, SB 798 will stop the airsoft and milsim community dead on its tracks. California has one of the most active and vibrant airsoft communities in the USA, and it is home to some of the major airsoft retailers and manufacturers.

The banding together of all those involved in the US Airsoft Industry realize that a victory of California SB 798 has serious implications to the rest of the countries as other states may just move to adopting the same penalties and requirements being proposed by the Senate Bill. If you think that it won't affect you since you live in another state, think again, it may just become a federal policy if someone wants to legislate this at the federal level, however haphazard this bill is.

As argued before, even if airsoft guns are colored brightly to be distinguished against real firearms, it is not a clear answer to minimizing gun violence, as real firearms are colored brightly and actually used in crimes, and thus it defeats the purpose. Furthermore, it puts a damper in airsoft business, which provides jobs and income to people, even how small it is as compared to other industries, but it contributes to economic growth in its own way. Rather than solving a problem of proper law enforcement as there are existing policies in place, SB 798 exacerbates it by alienating a community of responsible airsoft players and retailers stopping a hobby that provides livelihood to US citizens.

So, how can you help? The US Airsoft Industry has put together how you can contact legislators in California to express your opposition to the SB 798:

A. Use this Sample Letter to write your own letter, you can modify it to suit your own personal opposition to the SB 798.

B. Contact California State Sentaors, especially the Bill's Sponsor, Senator State Capitol:

It is not yet too late to voice out your opposition. Having a united voice against SB 798 and provide reasonable and mature arguments against it may just enlighten the legislators at voting for the bill.  But in voicing your opposition, what is always important is to give your own policy recommendations at minimizing the problems that the Bill is thought to address: avoid irresponsible transport and use of replica firearms through "perceived threats" to public order when used in crimes and or shown in public places.

Better move now, the sport needs your help, action always speaks louder than words.
