Young Girls, Pink Guns, and SB 199 Campaign Update

Logan

I reserved this video for last as it many of you would love to send this video to State Senator Kevin De Leόn to state your opposition to SB 199. In this video, which is part of ABC News' Inside Look at 'Young Guns: A Diane Sawyer Special', show that pink guns would tempt young girls to hold the firearms, even if they have been warned that guns would be dangerous for them and that they should not touch and call for an adult if they find a gun lying around.

While not shown in the previous videos that were part of the Weekend Feature Story, young girls were more responsible in following instructions to not touch and call for adults when they find guns as compared to the boys who actually played with the guns left for them to find in the experiments. The guns in the previous videos were colored in the usual colors that guns are associated with ---  black, or chrome, or metallic.

But how about pink colored guns? Would the girls resist the temptation of holding the guns? Well, for any parent with girls, you know the answer:

<

The common reasons for the girls who picked-up the guns and played with them is that they thought they were "fake" and also were "toys" even if the guns they found were Crickett "My First Rifles" which are actually .22 firearms that must not be held by children without adult supervision and are not even sold to children but bought my parents who want to introduce their kids to firearms. But bright colored guns do attract children thinking of them as toys  since most toys and clothes for children are brightly colored.

Just imagine if those rifles in the video were loaded. I am sure you will again cringe at that thought.

Now just imagine if those were airsoft guns that are loaded and the children who found them were not wearing eye protection, or were pointing them too close at their playmates? I am sure that you will also cringe at that thought.

The video confirms what we all know, that brightly colored airsoft guns (and brightly colored real guns) do not help solve the problem of gun safety for children and adults. They may just in fact worsen the situation given the attraction of children to brightly colored things; and for girls, the bright pink guns would think of them as harmless Barbie guns. With SB 199 going through the California State Assembly, in the second phase of the legislative process, it's really best to share this video, and other videos similar to it to the California State Legislators for them to think twice before voting on the Bill.

I would even suggest that the Airsoft Safety Foundation engage child safety experts, and child psychologists to conduct similar experiments to further confirm. Of course, it is best that these experiments should be independent and should not be duly influenced by stakeholders.

Speaking of the Airsoft Safety Foundation, they recently posted an update last Friday on their efforts, and have had a discussion with the Los Angeles City Council that would make them qualify their support of SB 199 all in the name of "Public Safety and Protection of Local Jobs":

SB-199 update: Los Angeles City Council have amended a resolution to state that they will support SB-199 under the condition that the bill is amended for true public safety, promotion of jobs, promotions of economy and without confusing law enforcement. Thru our lobbying efforts, our voices are heard. Our goal, after-all, is to promote safety (reminding the public to treat Air gun / Airsoft with respect and seriously), not to provide a false sense of security (making them look like toys, or confuse the public with a false sense of security and real fire-arms that are colored). The entire industry is working very hard. Please urge everyone to contribute to our proactive approach in working with the legislators, in keeping our industry in California.

The millions of Airsoft and Airgun owners, over 10,000 jobs in California, the Airsoft Industry that resides in California (90% of the industry), 100000+ police officers in California, and 500+ business (100+ in Los Angeles City); shouldn't have to suffer because of a handful of individuals violating current law. All police officers we spoke to have voiced that if this law passes they wouldn't know how to do their job.

Airsoft is among the safest of all sports when it comes to rate of accidents vs. number of users.

We should focus on education, rather than asking the users to treat the products less seriously.

The "colored" real-firearm industry has grown since over 10+ years ago. It is a fact that thousands of them exist.

It's time to further reason with Senator De Leόn that SB 199 would be counterproductive in terms of safety, jobs, and the California economy. There will be compromises somewhere, but if a win-win situation can be found all, then those compromises will be worth it.
