Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P9 M2.0s With Compensators

Smith & Wesson’s Performance Center has been busy tinkering under the bonnet again, this time in a collaboration with TALO. The result is a pair of M&P9 M2.0 models that look like a competitive shooter might enjoy using. By adding a compensator to both the polymer and metal-framed variants, the focus has shifted toward making the shooting experience a bit more civilised and significantly flatter.

The prominent feature is undoubtedly the Strike Industries threaded compensator. For those unfamiliar with the physics of it, a compensator redirects the gases escaping the muzzle upwards to counteract the natural tendency of the barrel to flip towards the sky. By keeping the muzzle rise in check, the pistol stays roughly where you left it after the first shot, which is quite helpful when you’re trying to land a second one in the same postcode.

It isn't just about managing the snap, though; the Performance Center has addressed the inevitable side effect of "comped" pistols: the carbon cloud. When you vent gases upwards, they usually end up coating your expensive red dot sight in a fine layer of soot. To combat this, Smith & Wesson introduced the ClearSight Cut, their own unique design that diverts those gases away from the optic. It’s a practical addition for anyone who prefers seeing their target through glass rather than a grey fog.

Underneath the slide sits a 4.87-inch stainless steel barrel with a 1:10" twist. While the technical specs are sound, the aesthetic choice is where things get a bit flashier. The barrel features spiral fluting and is finished in either copper or gold PVD. It’s a look that says, "I take my hobby seriously," without being quite as loud as a neon sign. The spiral fluting also shaves off a bit of weight, though let’s be honest, it mostly looks rather sharp through the slide's lightening cuts.

The interface between the shooter and the machine has seen some refinement as well. The M&P M2.0 has always been known for its 18-degree grip angle—a nod to those who find the steeper rake of other polymer pistols a bit unnatural. To ensure the thing stays in your hand, they’ve included four interchangeable palmswell grip inserts, allowing you to tailor the girth to your specific palm size.

Unlike the curved triggers of yesteryear that could lead to inconsistent finger placement, the flat profile encourages a straight press. When combined with a Performance Center tuned action, it is claimed that the result is a crisper break and a more predictable reset. It’s the sort of tweak that doesn’t make you a better marksman overnight but certainly stops the equipment from getting in your way.

The slide itself is stainless steel with an Armornite finish, designed to withstand the usual rigours of holster wear and the elements. It’s optic-ready, of course, because iron sights are increasingly becoming the "backup plan" in the 21st Century firearms. However, if you do prefer the old-fashioned way, the pistol comes with a blacked-out rear sight and a night-sight front post, providing a clear reference point even in dim light.

Each pistol ships with a generous assortment of magazines: two 17-rounders for those who value a flush fit, and two 23-rounders for those who value not having to reload quite often. Whether you opt for the classic polymer frame or the newer, slightly more substantial metal-frame version, the inclusion of four magazines in the box is a welcome departure from the industry standard of "here's two, buy the rest yourself."

The new M&P9 M2.0 editions represent a thoughtful integration of aftermarket-style upgrades directly from the factory. By combining a tuned trigger, a compensated barrel, and smart gas management, Smith & Wesson has produced a platform that may prove to be remarkably easy to handle. It won't do the aiming for you, but it certainly makes the process of staying on target feel like less of a chore.
