More news on attempts to control airsoft guns, especially when they are used like real weapons to scare people or commit crimes. The News Tribune of Tacoma, Washington State, reports an incident in which a Federal Way officer confronted with a man pointing a gun at him and not knowing that it was an airsoft gun. He fired at the gunman twice, missed, but managed to arrest the man, only to find out it's a bb handgun the man was carrying.
"Federal Way Police Officer Brian Walsh had no way of knowing that the gun being pointed at him was a fake.
All he knew is that the car prowler he was chasing near a busy shopping center pulled out what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun.
So Walsh fired. His two shots missed and no one was hurt. The man, Daven Clayton, was subsequently arrested.
But Federal Way Police learned from the May 2008 incident that there was little they could do to punish people who use look-alike weapons against police officers.
That’s why they’re pushing a bill in the state Legislature to create a 12-month sentence enhancement for people who use fake guns during encounters with police."
