Evike KWA Super V KRISS GBB Video: Is It Real? Or Is It Memorex?

Logan

Now that a full day has passed since Evike.com uploaded their "KWA Super V KRISS GBB SMG" video that took the airsoft community by storm. Since the KRISS airsoft version is one of the most anticipated airsoft products in the airsoft world, as it has proven to have been elusive ever since a project to make one was announced in 2007 and a mock-up was shown during the Shot Show 2008 by MadBull Airsoft.

The MadBull Airsoft version didn't see the light of day, as TDI-KRISS got bought by another company, now known as KRISS Systems SA, a Switzerland-based company. With the the new owners of the KRISS, they started searching for another airsoft manufacturer in 2010, during the IWA 2010, and finally settled with KWA, with mockup models shown with the new partner during the Shot Show 2011. Airsoft players are finally relieved that it is going to be a reality.

News about the KRISS airsoft replica soon died down. But it has always been in the back of the minds of airsoft players, noticeably us here at Popular Airsoft as recently we had the Swiss Invaders Airsoft team visit the KRISS Systems SA office in Switzerland (story soon to be released here). We are hoping that this replica will be released in time for the Christmas season.

Then Evike came up with this video "EvikeTV- The *NEW* KWA Super V KRISS GBB (Exclusive First Look!)" uploaded at YouTube yesterday and catching everybody by surprise. Once the video went viral, as airsoft forums and news sites came alive with news of the video. However, a good number of players sensed that there's something not right about the video. Thumpy's 3-D House of Airsoft emailed us about this, and we contacted KWA about this.

KWA disavowed any knowledge about the video as it's not their "official prototype", confirming the doubts of some sectors. The most obvious question is the iPad app that allows you to configure the FPS up to 3000 and the ROF to 100, which is a dead give-away that this was an elaborate hoax. Furthermore, how can a gas blowback SMG, without any electronics, be able to communicate to an electronic gadget for configuration?

So with this, we tried to assemble some bits on why this was an elaborate hoax:

1. Evike.com has a history of making jokes in their airsoft videos. This was pointed out by Moondog of Moondog Industries when we emailed him. Here are two examples of their video jokes:

2. 50-round magazine does not lock into the mag well. It's shown 3:24 of the video as upon insertion of the mag, it went down a bit as Matt, the host, goes into a firing position. The presenter kept it there by holding to the mag rather than place his left hand to the vertical foregrip.  This was pointed out by Thumpy's 3-D House of Airsoft.

3. The recoil shows some acting. You will notice that as Matt pulls the trigger during single-shot mode and when he goes full auto the "kick" wasn't the same. More of just an arm shake to mimic recoil in full auto.

4. The wonders of video editing software. You will notice that he's not hitting any target when he was firing during single-shot mode and no bbs bouncing around either. But when he goes full auto, it seems that there were bbs being fired, as the curtain at the end of the target shooting area moved. But then notice at 3:34, 3:35 and 3:36 that the targets area jumped vertically and back. Watch the video in full screen and you'll notice it as it's not noticeable in small screen size. This means that a previous video had been made and imposed on this scene. The firing sound was audio added during the editing.

5. How about the gun itself? We wonder if this was made just for the video as the details is really good, even the bolt's sound is real, but the most plausible answer was mentioned by someone: it's a real KRISS Super V Vector SBR/SO .45 ACP with Threaded Barrel! It's available in the US so either someone from Evike owns one or they borrowed/rented it from one of the dealers near them. There are over 10 KRISS dealers near the area of Evike.

6. Frustration on the long journey of the KRISS airsoft replica to be a reality. Moondog finally got a reply from Evike.com on why they created a video. We have to agree on this sentiment due to reasons that we stated above early in this story:

"It was a publicity stunt for KWA since the release took too long. And we did make it way more than obvious that it is not real. All we have in terms of prototype is a shell. = )  The rest is a ghetto rigged M11 or MP9..."

There you go folks. Any other mistakes in the video that you've found? It's a good one made by Evike, but with sharp eyes and even more curious players, this was proven to be a hoax.

But it was fun while it lasted. While some of you might be peeved that it's a joke, Evike.com may just have encapsulated the frustration and patience of airsoft players with the release of the KRISS airsoft. As we mentioned before, the KRISS airsoft project was originally announced in 2007. That's a long time in airsoft product development. Even the ARES Knight's LMG project took long but still didn't have to hit three years before it hit the market.

Our thanks to Moondog Industries, Thumpy's 3-D House of Airsoft, KWA, and Evike.com for helping clarifiy this.
