New Canadian Army Helmet Undergoes Testing

Gungho Cowboy

The Canadian Army are pushing ahead with the new generation ballistic helmets designed to improve soldier protection on the field. This is still undergoing testing and it is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC). This helmet is an adaptable, modular head protection system. This helmet is designed not only for ballistic protection, but also impact protection.

You will notice that the mandible module is getting more adherents, with the UK and the US already looking into this. Revision's Batlksin is the most visible system that goes very modular to suit different mission environments. The Canadian Army new gen helmet has the following components:

  1. Inner Shell impact protection
  2. Outer Shell for Ballistic Protection
  3. Mandible for mouth and chin protecion
  4. Visor for eye protection
  5. Nape Guard to protect the back of the neck/head (just imagine a 21st Century samurai warrior)

What makes this Canadian helmet different from the others that were announced before are the inner shell, outer shell, and nape guard which gives even more protection for the soldier. Overall, this looks like a good head, face, and neck protection system. Even with all these components, the helmet system looks lightweigth enough rather then burden the soldier with an even more weight. Just like the Batlksin, this has an NVG mount, and I wonder if they'll also add a side rail system in the future.

The mandible module seems to need a riser for scopes and optics as it raises it the head further from the stock. If you see in the video, there's a mount which raises an EOTech Holosight much higher than the usual. Another to thing that wasn't explained in the video is how to add comms such as headset and radio mics.

As to when the helmet gets officially approved for it to be issued to rest of the Canadian Army, we don't know. But it's glad to know that the northern neighbours of the Americans are getting ahead in soldier protection system.
