DJI Osmo 360

The DJI OSMO 360, a new entry into the 360-degree action camera market, was officially launched on July 31, 2025. It enters a competitive space dominated by established rivals like the Insta360 X5 and GoPro Max. DJI has positioned this camera as a high-performance option, incorporating features designed to appeal to both casual users and more demanding content creators. The camera's design borrows elements from its competitors, with a squat, square body like the GoPro Max, and a dual-lens layout.

The Osmo 360's core specifications include a pair of 1-inch square CMOS sensors, which DJI states are optimized for 360-degree capture. This hardware enables the camera to record 8K video at up to 50 frames per second (fps) and capture 120-megapixel panoramic photos. The larger sensor size and pixel count are intended to improve low-light performance and overall image quality. It also supports 10-bit color depth and a D-Log M color profile for advanced post-production work.

In a direct comparison with the Insta360 X5, the DJI Osmo 360's main advantages are its higher video frame rate in 8K (50fps versus the X5's 30fps) and its larger 1-inch sensors. The Insta360 X5, by contrast, uses dual 1/1.28-inch sensors. While the Osmo 360's photo resolution of 120MP surpasses the X5's 72MP, the Insta360 X5 offers the practicality of user-replaceable lenses, a feature the Osmo 360 lacks. The Insta360 X5 also has a larger battery capacity and a more established software ecosystem.

The GoPro Max, an older model in the market, records 360 videos at a lower 5.6K resolution. While a GoPro Max 2 is rumored, the original Max does not compete with the 8K capabilities of the new DJI and Insta360 cameras. The GoPro Max does offer a familiar user interface and robust single-lens "HERO mode," but its lower resolution and aging technology make it a different class of device compared to the latest offerings.

A key feature of the DJI Osmo 360 is its integration with DJI's audio and editing ecosystems. The camera can connect directly to DJI Mic 2 or Mic Mini transmitters for high-quality audio recording, without the need for a separate receiver. The companion DJI Mimo and DJI Studio apps provide editing tools, including AI-powered features for object tracking and video creation, which are designed to simplify the post-production workflow.

The Osmo 360's physical design is both durable and functional. It is IP68-rated, waterproof to 10 meters, and can operate in temperatures as low as -20°C. The camera also features a magnetic quick-release system for easy mounting and a 1/4" thread hole for compatibility with various accessories. This versatility in mounting is a significant factor for action camera users who require flexible setups for their activities.

For Airsoft players, a 360-degree camera like the DJI Osmo 360 provides a distinct advantage. Unlike a traditional camera that records a fixed point of view, a 360 camera captures the entire surrounding environment. This allows players to reframe their footage in post-production to show every angle of the action, even moments they didn't see during play. A head or weapon-mounted 360 camera can capture both the player's perspective and the broader context of the field, creating more dynamic and comprehensive gameplay videos.

The exposed lenses on 360 cameras, however, present a potential vulnerability in airsoft. A direct hit from a BB could damage the lenses. While the Insta360 X5 has user-replaceable lenses, which can be an advantage in this scenario, the DJI Osmo 360's fixed lenses would require a more involved repair process. As such, airsoft players using any 360 camera are advised to use dedicated lens protectors to mitigate the risk of damage.

The DJI Osmo 360 is a notable new entrant to the 360-degree camera market. Its 8K/50fps video, large sensors, and integration with DJI's ecosystem present a strong alternative to the Insta360 X5. While the Insta360 X5 retains an advantage with its replaceable lenses and larger battery, the Osmo 360’s feature set is aimed at a similar user base of creators and adventurers. The GoPro Max, while still a viable option for some, is outpaced by the newer technology in the Osmo 360 and X5.
