The IWA OutdoorClassics 2026 in Nuremberg has been buzzing with the usual array of tactical gear and outdoor gadgets, in airsoft, Wolverine Airsoft gets to be under the limelight this week. They have finally pulled the curtain back on the MTW AK-105. For those who have lived within the "Modular Training Weapon" ecosystem, this is a significant pivot. It marks the first time their purpose-built HPA architecture has been housed in something other than an AR-style receiver, bringing that mechanical consistency to the AK platform.

For years, AK enthusiasts in the airsoft world have largely had to rely on "drop-in" kits, which often involve a fair amount of tinkering, shimming, and perhaps a few choice words to get everything aligned. Wolverine’s approach with the MTW AK-105 is to remove the guesswork. By building the rifle from the ground up around their new INFERNO XTS HPA engine, they’ve prioritised intrinsic alignment. This means the engine, hop-up, and barrel are designed to sit in perfect harmony, rather than being forced to play nice inside a shell designed for a different type of airsoft technology.

The exterior doesn’t skimp on the grit, either. It features a stamped steel receiver set that feels properly industrial, complemented by a CNC-machined trunnion and engine chassis. It is a rugged bit of kit that manages to look correct while hiding some very modern internals. Even the branding is subtle, with the classic WA logo etched into the steel. It weighs in at a sturdy 6.1lbs, giving it enough heft to feel authentic without requiring a trip to the physio after a long weekend in the woods.

Under the hood—or rather, the dust cover—sits the INFERNO XTS. This HPA engine is the heart of the beast, but the real brain is the BLINC Bluetooth Fire Control Unit (FCU). In a move that feels very 2026, you can now adjust your Rate of Fire, Dwell, and burst settings via your phone. If you happen to own a compatible Acetech Bluetooth chronograph, the system can even auto-tune its own dwell settings. It is a far cry from the days of counting blinking LEDs and pressing tiny buttons with a toothpick.

One of the more clever bits of engineering is the magazine detection system. Wolverine has implemented a functional charging handle and detector board that allows for simulated empty magazine detection. Whilst currently in "beta," the goal is to stop the rifle from firing when the mag is dry, it has a functional charging handle and detection board. To assist with the frantic mid-firefight fumble, the magwell has been engineered to prevent magazine over-travel, making those reloads a bit more fluid than the traditional AK rock and lock.

The modularity here is quite extensive, which will please the tinkerers. While it is a proprietary system, it maintains MTW-spec compatibility for engines, hop-up bodies, and inner barrels. If you have a preferred handguard, the rifle is compatible with LCT-spec furniture. For those who want to cross the streams between East and West, it uses a steel buffer tube adapter, allowing for Milspec AR-style stocks and sling plates. You can even fit real-steel grips, provided you are brave enough to take a dremel to them to run an air line through.

Maintenance has been simplified to the point of being almost thoughtful. Wolverine has hidden an integrated takedown tool inside a dummy cleaning rod. It’s a nice touch that acknowledges the reality of field repairs. The feed tube is constructed from stainless steel for longevity, and the hop-up, trigger, and front sight post are all fully adjustable. It’s a platform designed for people who actually use their gear rather than just hanging it on a wall for "clout" photos.

In terms of power, the AK-105 operates on an input pressure of 60-160 PSI, powered by a standard 6-8V JST battery. The muzzle is tipped with an LCT Steel AK-105 flash hider on 24mm clockwise threads, and it ships with a 130-round LCK74 magazine. It is a comprehensive package that seems to bridge the gap between the "it just works" reliability of the MTW series and the soul of the Kalashnikov design.

As the IWA show continues, the MTW AK-105 has shown how far HPA technology has come. It is no longer just about shoving a solenoid into a gearbox shell; it is about purpose-built systems that respect the aesthetics of the source material. If you have been waiting for an AK that performs like a laser-aligned tournament rig but looks like it belongs in a muddy trench, this might be your next purchase.
