Roll out the Barrels!

Brahma

We all want accuracy in every shot, much more if you’re playing the sniper role. On top of that, consistency and stability are the other things we need to consider. Out-of-the-box sniper rifles, like the Tokyo Marui [TM] G-Spec VSR-10, are designed to do just that—fire accurately MOST of the time. In one of our sniper interviews in this issue, the need for a balanced weapon has also been mentioned. A balanced weapon, is an efficient weapon, they say.

Moreover, there will be times when an embedded sniper needs to get the hell out of where he’s lurking to save his ass, especially when the SHTF! Mobility is paramount. Given the overall length of a standard sniper rifle, that may be next to impossible.

With these thoughts, PDI Co. Ltd of Japan came out with a solution: three Custom Outer Barrels for the G-Spec VSR-10 sniper rifle—Front Bull, Light and Taper Front—that aims to address the situations mentioned above.

Tomohiko Nishizono, sales manager, revealed to us that the PDI Custom Outer Barrels are made from Duralumin, a lightweight aluminum alloy that contains copper, magnesium and manganese; and is widely used in aircraft construction. Each CNC-machined outer barrel is coated with matte black alumite to rid the metal of its natural gloss.

What differentiate the PDI Custom Outer Barrels from each type is their thickness (inner and outer diameter) and the availability of a one- or two-piece (with bull barrel base) version.

Front Bull Barrel Series

This version is available in long- (L) and Pro Sniper length- (P) types with lengths of 554mm and 570mm, respectively, with inner barrel length of 430mm. Characterized by thicker overall dimensions, the Front Bull Barrel series is recommended for “heavy-hitter” snipers, those who wouldn’t trade accuracy and consistency for anything the airsoft world has to offer. The thicker construction of the outer barrel set gives the rifle a front-heavy configuration that prevents the outer barrel from quivering after every shot, making for a more stable firing platform.

The Front Bull Barrel series consists of:

  • a bull barrel base
  • barrel spacer (VSR-10 Front Barrel Series)
  • bull barrel cap or G-Spec conversion adapter

Taper Front Barrel Series

Noticeable in the Taper Front Barrel series is how the front end’s inner diameter varies from its rear end—the front end is 23.2mm in diameter, while the rear is 30.5mm. This “tapered” design of the barrel’s inner diameter makes it front-heavy like the Front Bull Barrel series, for the same balancing effect, necessary to accomplish steady and accurate shots.

This 554mm-long version is available in three models. The Tornado features a spiral flute alongside its outer barrel surface, the Flute has the standard fluted look, while the Standard model comes with an even surface.

Each set comes standard with:

  • the bull barrel base
  • a barrel spacer (VSR-10 Front Barrel Series)
  • Pro Sniper muzzle cap or Pro Sniper silencer attachment

Light Outer Barrel Series

This is recommended more for designated marksmen and assault team members, than for snipers, since they do much running and climbing. This lightweight—only 220g—outer barrel has a one-piece configuration and has the same inner diameter as that of the G-Spec, which is 27mm. Other dimensions are 1.75mm wall thickness and 570mm length (Pro Sniper length).

The kit requires:

  • a G-Spec barrel spacer
  • a bull barrel cap or G-Spec conversion adapter
