Perhaps those who still remember the Vietnam War movie “Apocalypse Now” will agree with me that one of the most memorable scenes is with Robert Duvall saying, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.” We get to watch him again saying that in 4K as the movie will be released again in theatres in Ultra High Definition 40 years after it was released.
Directed by Francis Coppola who also co-wrote it with John Millius, the story is about mission of Captain Benjamin L. Willard played by Martin Sheen, who was sent to assassinate Colonel Kurtz played by the late Marlon Brando who was accused of murder is thought to be insane.
“Apocalypse Now” when it was released, got mixed reviews, but performed well at the box office. It bagged the Palme D’Or at Cannes and received Best Cinematography and Best Sound at the Academy Awards. Produced on what is considered to a big budget at that time and was shot in the Philippines to have access to American military hardware as the Philippines hosted two of the largest U.S. bases outside of the U.S. mainland at that time as well as can provide cheap labour for the production.
Nowadays, it is considered to be one of the best war movies of all time.
The remastered 4K version “Final Cut” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival 2019 in New York. It is planned for release in select theatres in August and for those who want a copy of the remastered edition at home, a Blu-Ray disc will be sold as well with audio commentary by Director Francis Ford Coppola, The Final Cut (183 Minutes), Redux Extended Cut (202 Minutes), and Theatrical Version (153 Minutes).

Francis Ford Coppola’s stunning vision of “The Heart of Darkness” in all of us remains a classic and compelling Vietnam War epic. Martin Sheen stars as Army Captain Willard, a troubled man sent on a dangerous and mesmerizing odyssey into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade American colonel named Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has succumbed to the horrors of war and barricaded himself in a remote outpost.
