For those who have been keeping an eye on the budget-friendly end of the optics market, Taurus USA has finally decided to bridge the gap between affordable and modern. The manufacturer recently announced the GX2 TORO, an update that brings their optics-ready slide system to the existing GX2 platform. It is nothing but logical for a company that has spent the last few years trying to shed its old reputation by leaning into the features that modern shooters expect as standard.

The "TORO" acronym stands for Taurus Optic Ready Option, a system that has already seen service on their G3 and GX4 models. By applying this to the GX2, Taurus is essentially acknowledging that the days of the red dot being a high-end luxury are well and truly over. It is like a car manufacturer finally including Bluetooth in the base model; it isn't groundbreaking technology anymore, but it is certainly nice to have it included without having to pay a custom shop to mill your slide.
Visually and mechanically, the GX2 TORO stays remarkably similar to its predecessor. Taurus has opted for the "if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it" approach, keeping the same ergonomic grip and stainless steel chassis. The primary difference is the slide, which now features a removable plate to accommodate various micro red dots. It is a practical move for a pistol designed for everyday carry, where the ability to acquire a target quickly often trumps the aesthetic of a sleek, uninterrupted slide line.

The decision to update the GX2 was apparently driven by a steady stream of customer requests. These days, the shooter is no longer content with standard iron sights, even on a value-tier firearm. Taurus has responded with a package that includes industry-standard sight dovetails and a Picatinny rail, ensuring that if you want to hang a light or a laser off the front, you won't need to resort to duct tape or expensive aftermarket adapters.
On the range, the GX2 TORO maintains the 13-round capacity that made the original a decent contender for those who find single-stack pistols a bit thin on the ground. The hinged trigger safety and external manual safety remain present, providing a bit of peace of mind for those who are still slightly nervous about carrying a striker-fired pistol. It is a functional, utilitarian tool that doesn't pretend to be a competition-grade masterpiece, which is perhaps its strongest selling point.

For the first-time buyer, this release simplifies the decision-making process. Previously, buying a budget pistol meant committing to iron sights or spending more than the gun was worth on a gunsmith. The GX2 TORO removes that barrier, offering a platform that can grow with the user. You might start with the irons and move to an optic later, without having to buy a second firearm or explain a significant credit card bill to your spouse.
Existing Taurus enthusiasts will likely see this as an easy upgrade path. If you already own a GX2 and have a drawer full of compatible holsters and magazines, the transition to the TORO is relatively painless. It is an incremental evolution rather than a revolution, but in the world of concealed carry, incremental improvements that don't break the bank are usually the ones that find their way into the most waistbands.

The inclusion of the MIL-STD-1913 rail is sensible engineering. It ensures that most compact tactical lights will fit without a struggle, making the pistol a versatile choice for home defence as well as carry. Taurus is banking on the idea that value shouldn't mean a lack of options, and this updated slide is the physical embodiment of that philosophy.
"The GX2 reset expectations for what a pistol at this price point should deliver, establishing itself as a leader in value for everyday carry," said Justin Porlier, VP Sales. "With the GX2 TORO, we're raising that bar again—adding capability without sacrificing what made it so accessible."
As expected, like its predecessor, the GX2 TORO does exactly what it says on the tin. It is an accessible, optic-ready handgun backed by a limited lifetime warranty, designed for people who care more about functionality than prestige. Whilst it won't win any beauty pageants, it provides a solid entry point for anyone looking to join the red dot revolution without having to skip a few mortgage payments.
