Barrett MRAD Covert

Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc. has officially pulled the curtain back on its 2026 offerings, signaling a busy year for the Murfreesboro-based manufacturer. The update introduces a variety of new rifle platforms, an expansion of their Precision Ammunition line, and a broader palette of finish options for those who prefer their hardware to match their environment. Among the highlights is the MRAD Covert, a rifle that seems to have been designed for people who appreciate the "less is more" philosophy, at least when it comes to physical footprint.

The MRAD Covert is a deliberate evolution of the established Multi-Role Adaptive Design (MRAD) lineage. While the original platform is known for its presence on the firing line, the Covert model focuses on tactical mobility and discreet transport. It is engineered to disassemble with minimal effort, allowing it to fit inside a standard backpack or the included Eberlestock Adapt bag. This makes it a practical choice for government personnel needing to move quietly through urban settings, or for hunters who would rather not wrestle with a full-sized rifle case while hiking through the brush.

Technically, the rifle remains rooted in the magazine-fed, bolt-action architecture that has defined Barrett’s recent successes. The receiver is machined from 7000-series aluminum and features an integral rail for optics. By retaining the core components of the full-size MRAD, Barrett ensures that the Covert doesn’t feel like a scaled-down compromise. Instead, it offers a sturdy platform for those who need to maintain a high level of precision while operating in cramped or sensitive environments.

Out of the box, the MRAD Covert is configured for either .308 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor, utilizing a 17-inch barrel. This shorter length is the key to its portability, yet it still manages to produce a five-shot sub-0.85 MOA accuracy. For the shooters who enjoy variety, the Covert remains fully compatible with all existing MRAD barrel conversion kits. This means switching calibers is a straightforward process requiring only a single tool, which is convenient for those who can never quite decide which cartridge is their favorite.

Inside the rifle, the bolt travels within a unique enclosed polymer guide. This design choice aims to provide smooth operation even when the environment is less than hospitable. While traditional metal-on-metal designs can occasionally bind when introduced to grit or lack of lubrication, the polymer interface keeps the action cycling reliably. It is a thoughtful inclusion for anyone who has ever had their day at the range—or their mission—interrupted by a stubborn bolt.

The trigger group offers another nod to modularity and ease of maintenance. It can be removed from the lower receiver quickly without any specialized tools. This feature is particularly helpful for field serviceability; if a component needs cleaning or inspection, you won’t need a degree in mechanical engineering to get the job done. It also allows users to swap or service the trigger without sending the entire rifle back to the shop, which is a win for both time and patience.

Ergonomics on the MRAD Covert are handled by a highly adjustable stock system. The length-of-pull can be adjusted by pressing a single button at the top of the stock, engaging a locking mechanism that secures two shafts. This setup is designed to withstand the standard drop tests required for military applications, ensuring the stock stays put even if the rifle takes a tumble. It provides a stable interface for the shooter without adding unnecessary complexity or weight.

To further assist with shooter comfort, the cheek piece is adjustable for height without tools and is reversible. This allows the user to find a side profile that fits their facial structure, facilitating a consistent eye alignment with the optic. Combined with a safety selector that features a short 45-degree throw and can be installed on either side, the rifle accommodates a wide range of shooting styles and preferences. The safety placement should feel familiar to anyone accustomed to modern sporting rifles, reducing the learning curve.

When it is time to pack up, the folding stock employs a robust hinge that unlocks with a button press. The stock folds to the right, which keeps the overall profile slim and protects the bolt handle from snagging on gear or the interior of a transport bag. It is a functional design that emphasizes the "covert" aspect of the rifle, allowing it to disappear into a pack until it is needed. Barrett has also expanded the finish options for 2026, so the rifle can be as visually subtle as its physical form suggests.

For those interested in seeing the MRAD Covert in person, Barrett will be displaying the rifle along with the rest of their 2026 lineup at the upcoming SHOT Show. Attendees can visit booth #10344 to get a closer look at the new platforms and the expanded ammunition offerings. Whether you are a professional operator or a long-range enthusiast, the Covert represents a significant step in making precision platforms more accessible and portable for a variety of use cases.
