If you have been playing Battlefield 2042 since it was first released last 19 November, you probably have joined a good number of players who felt frustrated with the game due to is numerous problems. Since its launch, it has become one of the worst reviewed games on Steam.
Indeed, it became one of the most played games on Steam when it was launched but since then, the number of players had decreased. In the earnings call for Q3, EA announced a very healthy fiscal quarter brought about by some best sellers such as FIFA 22 and Apex Legends. But where was Battlefield 2042?
According to EA CEO Andrew Wilson in a meeting with investors on 1 February, the game “Did not meet expectations. The company expects that it will take a US$100 million hit in terms of revenue due to game’s poor performance.
He explained that, “Developing this game with our teams working from home for nearly two years ultimately proved to be challenging. Through our process of testing and preparation we believed the experience was ready to be put in our players' hands. We launched with strong stability; however, as more players experienced the full game, it became clear there were unanticipated performance issues that we would need to address. Some of the design choices we made with the game also did not resonate with everyone in our community.”
Battlefield 2042 is said to be an ambitious game with its ability to scale the gameplay that will include massive multiplayer battles of up to 128 players in Conquest and Breakthrough as well as the inclusion of dynamic weather that can affect the way of playing. Hazard Zone is more of team-effort Battle Royale style game in which players need to achieve objectives before a storm arrives.
With the problems besetting the game, EA has decided to delay the release of Season 1 to this summer as explained in their most recent update:
You’ve waited patiently to hear from us on what we’re doing to address the issues with Battlefield 2042 that you have told us about, and the direction you can expect to see us take in the months ahead. Today we are stating our team's commitment to bring the game up to the highest standards that we all hold for the franchise.
We have heard you. So, we are heavily invested and committed to the future of Battlefield 2042 – working on taking action on multiple fronts to address feedback and implement extensive fixes to the game, key features that are important to you, and getting team play where it needs to be.
We’ve had to make some big decisions to ensure that our next set of updates can be focused on delivering these improvements, with the most substantial one being to move the release date of our first Season to early Summer. This decision gives us the time to focus on improving the Battlefield 2042 experience while finalizing the development of our seasonal content to ensure that it all reaches our standard for quality.
The same post lays out the different updates that they will be delivering such as Scoreboard, All Platform Voice Communication, and Player Profile. They will also be putting a new feedback loop so they can respond to critical issues in a live environment. It will be a big task and the developers surely have their work cut out up to summer in which players may expect a lot of improvements to the game or they may just walk away from it.
Battlefield 2042 is a first person shooter that can be played on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
