CZ 75 RAF Limited Edition

Last week, Colt CZ Group announced the CZ 75 RAF Limited Edition pistol, a commemorative firearm specifically designed to honor the valiant service of Czechoslovak pilots and ground personnel who served within the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. This exclusive production run is strictly limited to a mere 56 individual pistols, a figure chosen to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities in that global conflict.

This special edition is based upon the highly regarded CZ 75 platform, a handgun model widely acknowledged as a seminal design that significantly shaped the trajectory of modern firearms engineering.

The design and detailing of the CZ 75 RAF Limited Edition are deeply imbued with elements that evoke both aviation and military heritage. Notably, the slide of the pistol incorporates precisely machined ports that draw their inspiration directly from the exhaust stacks of the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. This powerful engine was the driving force behind the iconic Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft, a symbol of British air power during the war. Furthermore, the surface treatment of the pistol's slide is carefully executed to mimic the distinctive riveted construction characteristic of wartime aircraft fuselage panels, lending a tactile and visual connection to aviation history.

Continuing the aeronautical theme, the design of the pistol grips is directly influenced by the elegant and functional wing structure of the Spitfire. This design cue not only enhances the overall appeal of the firearm but also provides a unique and historically resonant tactile experience for the user. Adding a further layer of symbolic meaning, the left grip panel is adorned with an artfully crafted silver badge. This badge represents a Czechoslovak field observer – pilot, a poignant emblem of the individuals being honored by this limited edition.

Further fine detailing can be seen in the design of the pistol's slide. The cocking serrations, found at the rear of the slide, have been deliberately shaped to echo the concentric circles that form the instantly recognizable RAF roundel. This symbol served as a crucial identification mark for Allied planes during the war. Moving to the base of the magazine, an engraving of the RAF pilot’s badge adds another layer of authentic military symbolism. The frame of the pistol itself features a prominent silver circlet, alongside the enduring motto of the Royal Air Force: "Per Ardua Ad Astra," a Latin phrase meaning "Through Adversity to the Stars." Adding a subtle yet distinctive visual element, the pistol's controls are finished in a shade known as Rainbow Blue.

In terms of its construction and finish, the CZ 75 RAF Limited Edition is built using high-quality chrome-molybdenum steel, for durability and reliability. The pistol is then treated with a refined nickel finish, which provides a lustrous appearance and enhanced corrosion resistance. The grips of the pistol feature polished ribs, adding a touch of elegance and improving the shooter's grip. Each individual pistol within this limited run bears a unique serial number. This numbering system is specifically designed to reference the four Czechoslovak squadrons that served with distinction in the RAF during the war: 310, 311, 312, and 313. This thoughtful detail further underscores the historical significance and commemorative nature of the firearm.

The presentation and packaging of the CZ 75 RAF Limited Edition have been given equal attention. Each pistol is carefully housed within a custom-designed aluminum case. The shape of this case is intentionally reminiscent of the oil tank found within the Spitfire plane. Adding to the evocative design, the lid of the case is shaped to resemble the iconic cockpit windscreen of the Spitfire, instantly connecting the firearm to its aviation inspiration. The underside of the case features a detailed engraving of the aircraft's instrument panel, further enhancing the collector's experience and the historical narrative.

Accompanying each CZ 75 RAF Limited Edition pistol is a collection of significant commemorative items. This includes a numbered collector’s certificate of authenticity, verifying the exclusivity and historical importance of the firearm. Also included is a replica of the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), a prestigious award bestowed upon RAF personnel for acts of valor and devotion to duty while flying in active operations against the enemy. A Spitfire-shaped key is provided for the case lock, continuing the aviation theme even in the smallest details.

Furthermore, each package contains an informative brochure dedicated to the Czechoslovak airmen who served in the RAF, providing historical context and honoring their contributions. Finally, a hand-painted illustration of Spitfire is included, adding an artistic element to this exceptional collector's set.

Born from Rene Ondra's 2019 design and realized in 2023, the CZ 75 RAF limited edition stands as a tribute to Czechoslovak RAF airmen, seamlessly merging precision engineering, history, and art through the collaborative efforts of CZ factory experts, Prague's Military History Institute, artist David Cerny, illustrator Jaroslav Velc, and master engraver Ondra, resulting in a harmonious blend of technical prowess, historical accuracy, and aesthetic appeal.

The CZ 75 RAF Limited Edition serves as a poignant and tangible tribute to the approximately 2,500 Czechoslovak individuals who bravely served in the ranks of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Tragically, many of these courageous individuals made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for the liberation of their homeland and the Allied cause. This limited edition pistol stands as a lasting and powerful reminder of their unwavering dedication, their courage in the face of adversity, and their invaluable contributions to the Allied victory.
