KelTec has never been a company to shy away from unconventional geometry. As the Florida-based manufacturer celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, it chose the international stage of Enforce Tac 2026 in Nuremberg this week to unveil its latest venture. The headline of the event is the MP50, a firearm that holds the distinction of being the first in the company's history designed from the ground up specifically for military and law enforcement agencies.
While the MP50 looks toward global defense contracts, the domestic commercial market has not been forgotten. The KP50 arrives as their offering to the civilian market, bringing the same technical updates to American shooters. This dual-track launch suggests a matured approach to product development, where professional-grade requirements and enthusiast interests are addressed simultaneously. By keeping a focus on both sectors, the company observes its history while attempting to carve out a new niche in the professional security sector.
The "Kay-P-Fifty" and "Em-P-Fifty" aim to address a category—the large-format pistol and machine pistol—that has seen minimal mechanical evolution for a generation. Most designs in this space have relied on decades-old ergonomics and feeding systems. KelTec's goal was to take the high-capacity 5.7x28mm platform and apply a modern engineering lens, focusing on the mechanics of how a shooter interacts with the firearm during a reload.

These firearms reflect a departure from the top-hinged magazine configuration that defined earlier high-capacity pistols. The new models feature a bottom-insert, drop-free 50-round magazine. This change aligns the platform with the muscle memory most shooters have developed with traditional handguns. By moving the magazine release and insertion point to a more conventional location, the company has prioritized speed and intuitive handling.
The engineering team managed to keep the signature 50-round capacity while overhauling the magazine's physical interaction with the receiver. This means the benefit of a deep magazine remains, but the logistical hurdles of reloading it under pressure are reduced. It is an acknowledgment that while having many rounds is useful, being able to swap them efficiently is equally important for real-world usability.
The KP50 Pistol serves as the base semi-automatic model for the 5.7x28mm caliber. It features a redesigned ergonomic grip that accommodates the new bottom-fed system while keeping the profile slim enough for a variety of carry or storage options. Out of the box, it is a streamlined platform that is ready for the addition of a brace or stock, depending on the user’s preference and local regulations, providing a lightweight solution for high-capacity needs.

For those who prefer more contact points, the KP50 Braced configuration adds a layer of stability. This version is tailored for shooters who value control over a slightly more compact footprint. Notably, this model ships with the 100-round Jungle Clip system, which effectively doubles the on-board ammunition. The inclusion of a stabilizing brace makes it a more versatile tool for extended range sessions or defensive applications where accuracy at distance is a factor.

The MP50 is where things get serious for the professional user. As a select-fire variant, it offers both semi-automatic and full-automatic capabilities. It comes duty-ready with an installed stock, Magpul MBUS sights, and the same 100-round Jungle Clip system found on the braced civilian model. This version is built to withstand the rigors of sustained fire, positioning it as a modern alternative for units that require a compact, high-capacity submachine gun.

Loading 50 rounds into a single magazine by hand can be a tedious chore, a reality KelTec addressed with the introduction of a dedicated speedloader. This accessory is the first of its kind designed specifically for this 50-round pistol platform. By reducing the physical effort and time required to prepare magazines, the speedloader turns a potential bottleneck into a non-issue, ensuring that users spend more time shooting and less time wrestling with springs.
The Jungle Clip system is perhaps the most practical low-tech innovation of the launch. By pairing two 50-round magazines back-to-back, a user has 100 rounds available in a single assembly. When the first magazine is empty, the user simply removes the unit, rotates it 180 degrees, and reinserts it. It is a straightforward way to manage a significant amount of ammunition without the bulk or mechanical complexity of a drum magazine.
Looking ahead, the KP50 will be available in several flavors to suit different needs, including a Short-Barreled Rifle (SBR) version and a factory-exclusive "Defender" model. Meanwhile, the MP50 will remain a restricted item, available only to qualified military and law enforcement entities. This launch suggests that KelTec is no longer just interested in being the most unique brand at the gun show; they are aiming for a seat at the table where professional standards are set.
