If there is a will, there is a way. That’s how inventors, artists, thinkers, and fabricators work that help propel human progress and the march of civilization to better our lives. It works the same way in airsoft as we see the innovations and more innovations in the development of airsoft guns and tech which basically are built on past innovations.

But in terms of grandeur, no one beats Kogoro Kurata, the CEO of Suidobashi Heavy Industry and behind the Kuratas robot that uses airsoft miniguns as weapons. That is the same Kuratas Mecha that got involved in the first Mech battle against the American-built MegaBots in 2017.

He is back in our airsoft radars as he revealed on Twitter what is to be the first airsoft Phalanx CIWS. And boy! You don’t want to be in front of it as can be loaded with 900,000 airsoft BBs according to his calculations. Somebody! Call the Guinness World of Records, they’ve got to include this as the biggest airsoft gun.

Here is the tweet, you can click here to check it on Twitter:

The Phalanx CIWS, or affectionally called “R2-D2” as it looks similar to the famous Star Wars droid, is close-in weapon system that is fully automated to guard against missiles, aircraft, and small waterborne vehicles. Built for naval point-defence systems, it also has a land version. When fired in anger, it fires 3,000 rounds per minute or around 50 rounds per second.

Kogoro Kurata’s airsoft Phalanx CIWs uses the custom CAW (Craft Apple Works) minigun with the barrels modified to make it look like the CIWS. The Phalanx CIWS itself is based on the 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon. To feed the almost a million BBs into this, the “R2-D2” area where the search and tracking radars are located has been turned into a BB tank. To expend that ammo, it will have to continuously fire for 5 hours. But Kogoro says the motor may burn out in 5 minutes of continuous firing so it will have to be fired in long bursts and let it cool after each burst.

He has posted a video on Twitter test firing it and it works. He also said he used phosphorescent BBs (Tracer BBs) at night and the light show was “beautiful” though he wasn’t able to record the test shoot. He promises that he’ll do another light show that is recorded properly.

The caveat during his testing of his work is that he’ll have to clean up the mess of all the BBs scattered around his workshop. He plans on doing it bigger area soon. Whether he’ll make a new mech to mount his creation or on a truck customised to make it look like a C-RAM or Counter-Rocket, Artillery, Mortar Intercept Land-Based Phalanx Weapon System (LPWS).

One thing for sure, it will be a formidable defence system in an airsoft event if it comes with auto-tracking features.
