If you remember the GoPro Hero Session Action Camera, it was the square entry level action camera that GoPro introduced in 2015 but stopped producing by 2018, there is an action camera similar to it released by its closes competitor in the market ---- the DJI Action 2.
The Chinese company which owns the largest market share in the commercial drone market, DJI is very much active in the camera market, including the action camera market since it introduced the OSMO action camera. The company dropped the OSMO for Action 2 just like what it did with the Pocket 2. Whilst the GoPro Hero Session is an entry level action camera, the Action 2 got features that can be found in the higher priced and new GoPro Hero10 Black.
The DJI Action 2 is a powerful action camera in a small package, with the ability to capture 4K footage at 120fps with its 12MP sensor and has a 155-degree field of view. As this is a modular system like the GoPro Hero10 Black, the camera module also has a OLED touch screen at the back that is protected by Gorilla Glass to withstand the bumps and falls an action camera will go through its life.
The Action 2 relies on magnets for its modularity, allowing one to mix and match modules such as front touchscreen module for selfies photos and videos (or framing one’s self for a video shoot). This module also adds more battery life and an array of microphones for better audio pickup and quality. Other modules is a battery module for more juice. Just to ensure modules are secure, DJI added physical clips to help with the magnets.
In case you forgot to bring your MicroSD card, it has a built-in 32GB storage as well as a slot for an MicroSD card.
But wait! There is more. The Action 2 has electronic image stabilization for smoother videos and horizon leveling. You can use it as a webcam for video conferencing which means it can also be used for livestreaming the action wherever you are as long as there’s wireless broadband.
The DJI Action 2 is priced at US$399.00 with the Power Bundle and it comes with camera module, battery module, magnetic lanyard, magnetic adapter mount, and power cable. For the US$519.00 Dual-Screen Combo, it comes with camera module, front touchscreen module, magnetic lanyard, magnetic ball joint adapter mount, and power cable.
The DJI Action 2 is now available to purchase the DJI online store and other authorized sellers.
