This is how I substitute a Magpul when it comes down to two or three magazines per pouch. Magpuls are great don’t get me wrong and the original product is not that expensive but a bunch of guys are using the homemade version on the field. And I never knew why until I’ve tried it. Using this version won’t change the dimensions of your magazine so you can continue using them in a double/triple pouch. I will continue using Magpuls on my plastic magazines only to protect them when they fall but my three metal mags will have the homemade version.
You’ll need man’s three best friends to complete this task: 550 Cord, 100mph tape and a sharp object:

550 cord. As you can see it on the picture now they selling it as Survival cord
Duct tape. Now they have it several different colors just pick your favorite.

A sharp object to cut the 550. Use scissors if you have safety concerns.
Howto:
1. Cut off about 10 inches of 550 and lay it on your magazine as it shown on the picture.

2. Apply one layer of tape all around the magazine.

3. Fold the slack back on the taped surface on both sides

4. Apply a second layer of tape

5. Cut off the excess cord on both sides

6. Lock and Load!
