One of the movies we have been anticipating is already in the theaters and is getting good reviews. “Free Guy” starring Ryan Reynolds of “Deadpool” fame is about a NPC in a video game who becomes self-aware and saves his video game world. For its first week of release, it has already topping the box office with a worldwide total of US$50.9 million.
Early into its release, there are talks of a sequel for the movie and Ryan Reynolds confirms it in a tweet:
Originally scheduled to be released last year, it was moved twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic but eventually it was decided for a Summer 2021 release.
Written by by Matt Leiberman and is produced by Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Adam Kolbrenner with Shawn Levy as director. Reynolds is joined by Jodie Comer of “Killing Eve” who plays the role of “Molotov Girl”, the human gamer named Millie Rusk and Reynold’s NPC “Blue Shirt Guy” falls in love with her.
Since becoming self-aware, Blue Shirt Guy starts making his video game world better by going against video game players destroying his world with his own AR glasses. Being a do-gooder non-NPC anymore character in the game eventually makes him famous and even had a question in “Jeopardy!” Together with the other NPCs, the Blue Shirt Guy and the Molotov Girl try to save their video game world
With the tweet sent out by Reynolds, 20th Century Studios retweeted it and is also confirmed by Shawn Levy. No details yet about how the sequel will be produced including its storyline, shooting, casting, and release dates.
For those who are waiting for a Disney Plus release for Free Guy, it looks like the HBO will have the first crack at it due to an existing agreement before it gets streamed on Disney’s online streaming service.
