The FBI has finally caught up with airsofters in terms of getting the latest in gear. In June 2021, the FBI posted a Federal Contract Opportunity for SiOnyx RFQ0001217 to find a dealer that can supply them the Sionyx products at the best possible price. It looks they finally settled on a 5-year fixed price deal as according to the CEO of Sionyx as reported by The Firearm Blog.
Airsofters are very much familiar with Sionyx Aurora Colour Night Vision Device since a good number with money to burn are using this device for milsim events as well as night time airsoft games. The model that the FBI is after is the high end Aurora Pro as part of the Explorer Package. The company claims they they have the only high-definition colour action camera with day and night imaging capability.
Aurora Pro Explorer Package
When we first announced the product in the airsoft world in 2018, we believe that that it does have a tactical purpose and we are right with airsofters being one of the first to make use of the Aurora. Sionyx are now selling this to various hobbies and professions including Military and Law Enforcement. In 2019, Sionyx was selected to deliver low-light camera modules for prototyping of low-light and night vision capabilities to the IVAS system for the U.S. Army.
The Aurora Pro has the newest sensor in the Aurora line. It features moonless starlight night vision, GPS, compass and accelerometer. It is also rated IP67 Water resistant and stream via the Sionyx App to a smart device whilst recording can be stored with the 256GB memory.
As for the Aurora Pro Explorer Package that the FBI will be procuring it has the following included in the package:
- Aurora PRO color night vision camera
- Hardshell waterproof case
- 940nm IR Illuminator
- Illuminator rail mount
- 2 camera batteries and external battery charger for Aurora
- 32 GB microSD card
- Rechargeable batteries and external battery charger for illuminator
- USB charge/data cable
However, at the product page of Explorer Package, the company says it is being phased out and whilst there is no more inventory at Sionyx (perhaps devoted to supply the FBI), other interested users can check with their retail partners if they still have it in stock. Owners will still be supported by Sionyx if under warranty or with valid reasons to request for customer support.
