A new helmet system is set to be launched later this year. In an announcement by SKYDEX and Helmet Comp, it is a tactical helmet protection system that uses the SKYDEX IsoFit Helmet Protection System. This system promises a number of features for protection as well as comfort to the wearer.
The IsoFit system was developed to resolve the problem with 360 fit systems as they not all head types can be fitted comfortably. This is due to being mainly fitted by tightening around the lower head with forehead and neck pressure points, resulting into discomfort and instability for most users.
So what is IsoFit? Here is what the website says:
IsoFit is a hemispherical micro adjustment system that integrates with the helmet liner and comfort padding that provides a natural, personalized fit.
- Fit: IsoFit technology fits any head shape, ensuring the proper fit for the highest level of head protection
- Comfort: IsoFit liner and comfort padding conforms to the contours of the head evenly
- Stability: The helmet remains centered and stable on the head during activity
While all these are great features, the Stability portion interests me most as a helmet that moves side to side during movement can be annoying and distracts when the soldier needs a free hand to adjust rather than keeping hands on the weapon at most times.
With the Energy Management System (EMS), which is a a lightweight viscoelastic interface component, that connects to the IsoFit liner in the interior, they can reduce the impact energy on the head to minimize head trauma.
It is indeed interesting to see this head protection system as there is a need for the improvements in helmet systems that can reduce head and brain injuries to soldiers due to blasts and ballistic impacts. The system has been explained here, we just need to see the actual helmet design which will be done in the fall of 2021.
Press release from Skydex tells more of this upcoming tactical helmet system:
