If you are in Japan or if you have good friends in Japan you might just be in luck. In this record breaking summer heat taking place in the Northern Hemisphere, the first thing that is always in people’s minds is how to keep their bodies cool. There are many ways to do that from carrying fans to always keeping hydrated, but when you are on the move, that’s not always easy to do. Now if there is something to keep ourselves cool that can be worn whilst on the road, that’ll be the product that many would want to throw their money at.

Sony may just have the product you need, and it is a wearable air conditioner called the Reon Pocket. Do not think of like the traditional air conditioner with the compressor as that would be impossible to wear and carry at most times. It is a credit-card sized device that uses thermoelectric cooling with Peltier, material that is used for cars and wine coolers.

It is battery-operated and can be charged within two hours. To wear it, you will insert it in the pocket of of a specially made undershirt. The pocket is found near the base of the shirt. Connect it to a mobile app and from there you can set the settings of how cool you want to be as long as within the parameters of the app. What’s even better? It can also be used to keep you warm in the winter.

Sony claims that it has conducted numerous simulations with the Reon Pocket and it can help cool the wearer’s body temperature by 13° degrees Celsius or 23° Fahrenheit or in colder environments, can keep one warm up to about 8° Celsius or around 14° Fahrenheit. The rechargeable battery lasts about 90 minutes after a full charge so it is best to use the Reon Pocket when it actually matter unless you brought with you several of these.

If you are sold, then you will have to go to Sony’s crowdfunding site called “First Flight”. Now, the problem is that even it meets its crowdfunding goal, Reon Pocket will only be available in Japan. Unless you have friends in Japan who can get this for you, you’re out of luck unless Sony wants to export this outside of Japan.

Prices range from ¥ 12,760 (US$118) to ¥19,030 (US$175) depending on the version and number of undershirts you want to get. Some are getting sold out though it’s still a long way to go before it gets fully funded as it has a target of ¥66,000,000 (US$607,926) so if you want this, better contact your friends in Japan which package you want.

Will it be useful for use in airsoft? With warmer weathers these days, we need something to cool ourselves in game (or keep us warm in winter) and the Reon Pocket looks to be a god-send. It can be useful for short duration games of around one hour though you can get more so you can have more to use during games. We just hope this product delivers and Sony might have just got itself another gold mine.
