Some good news for the fans of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell video game series before the year ends. Ubisoft announced last week that they gave approval for the remake of the popular stealth shooter game and Ubisoft Toronto will be spearheading the production.

It will be using the game engine used by The Division called Snowdrop instead of the Unreal Engine though reports say that it will not be an open world game. The game engine will also be used for the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and an upcoming Star Wars video game being developed by Ubisoft.

The development is still in its early stages and will remain faithful the stealth aspects of the game. The game follows the story of the Sam Fisher who is a highly trained agent of "Third Echelon", a fictional black-ops sub-division within the NSA. The developers stress that this is a remake rather than a remaster and it will be built from the ground up.

While it is also a shooter game, it has high emphasis on stealth in order to accomplish mission objectives. The game began in 2002 with the last being the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist in 2013 while the novels continued with the last book, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Firewall in 2022. As game producer Matt West said:

To me, a remake takes what you'd do in a remaster and goes a little bit further with it. The original Splinter Cell has a lot that was amazing and revolutionary at the time it came out, 19 years ago. The gaming public now has an even more refined palate. So, I think it kind of has to be a remake as opposed to a remaster. Although we're still in the very earliest stages of development, what we're trying to do is make sure the spirit of the early games remains intact, in all of the ways that gave early Splinter Cell its identity. So, as we're building it from the ground up, we're going to update it visually, as well as some of the design elements to match player comfort and expectations, and we are going to keep it linear like the original games, not make it open world. How do we make sure that new fans are able to pick up the controller and dive right in, and fall in love with the game and the world right from the get-go?

Ubisoft is looking for talent to be involved in the remake and some veterans of the game production will be joining the team as well. There are no details yet if the remake will require some rewriting of the story and when the game is going to be released including beta test schedules. The Splinter Cell titles were playable on many platform such as Windows PC, Xbox, Playstation, Mobile Devices, and Nintendo handhelds.
