After years of rumours and speculation, a film adaptation of Ubisoft's popular hacking game Watch Dogs has finally begun production. This long-awaited project has been stuck in development for a staggering decade, leaving fans to wonder if it would ever see the light of day.

The news comes courtesy of a social media update from Ubisoft on Twitter/X, featuring a set photo with the cryptic caption "Lights_Camera_Action.exe." Helmed by director Mathieu Turi and cinematographer Daniele Massaccesi, the film is shrouded in secrecy, with plot details currently under wraps.

Watch Dogs Movie Announcement

The Watch Dogs franchise debuted in 2014 with the first game, thrusting players into the shoes of Aiden Pearce, a vigilante hacker with the power to manipulate the city's technology. The success of the initial title spawned two sequels, set in San Francisco and London respectively, solidifying Watch Dogs as a major player in the gaming world.

Ubisoft's initial ambitions for the Watch Dogs film were significant, and after a decade of waiting, it seems like those plans are finally coming to fruition. The cast includes Tom Blyth, known for his role in The Hunger Games prequel, and Sophie Wilde from the film Talk To Me. However, the specifics of their characters remain a mystery.

Whilst the screenplay's initial draft was penned by Christie LeBlanc; Victoria Bata has overseen revisions according to Deadline. Production is overseen by a team including New Regency CEO Yariv Milchan, company president Natalie Lehmann, and Ubisoft's head of content Margaret Boykin.

As the release date remains elusive, a 2025 premiere seems like a reasonable possibility. Whether the film will feature an original story or draw inspiration from one of the existing Watch Dogs games is anyone's guess. With three distinct narratives to choose from – the gritty Chicago tale of Aiden Pearce, the youthful San Francisco adventure of Marcus Holloway, or the dystopian London of Watch Dogs Legion – the possibilities are intriguing.

With production underway, fans can finally rejoice at the prospect of seeing Watch Dogs leap from the screen. Until a release date is confirmed, gamers can revisit the acclaimed titles and delve deeper into the world of hacking and urban revolution.
