It does not have to be really expensive when you are starting your own Airsoft YouTube channel and become the next big celebrity in the hobby. As we recommended 5 years ago, it is best to start with your smartphone as its video taking capabilities have become even better that you do not need to spend on expensive DSLRs or camcorders whilst starting out.

Camera tech in smartphones has vastly improved since then and tools to help improve your video taking have also become inexpensive, in the case of gimbals that help smoothen videos as video stabilization in cameras still need to be improved and gimbals are lightyears better than in camera stabilization. Now, they are less cumbersome and tedious to use, and in the case of the DJI’s OM 4 gimbal for smartphones, just made it really convenient.

Our major complaint really with gimbals for smartphone is that how it can be annoying installing and removing our smartphones from gimbals. The solution was always the use of clamps and they are good at holding the smartphones but also tenacious at not releasing the smartphones when we need them for other purposes. DJI’s competitor in the gimbal market, Zhiyun, released the Smooth-Q2 last year and it has a quick detach (QD) clamp that by the using a lever, can release the smartphone quickly .

With the DJI OM 4 (not OSMO now), the company went further than Zhiyun, and instead relies on magnet for its QD solution. There are two options: a QD magnetic clamp or a QD magnetic ring. We prefer the QD magnetic clamp as you can use it with a case whilst the QD magnetic ring requires you to remove the case and install it on the back on the smartphone. With that, it makes mounting and removing the smartphone from the gimbal such a breeze than the competition.

With newly update DJI MIMO app, there are features you can do with the gimbal such as Active Track 3.0, Story Mode, DynamicZoom, CloneMe Pano, and Gesture Control. The Active Track 3.0 now can track smaller subjects such as children and pets with higher accuracy. The CloneMe Pano helps you create clones of the subject in one photo.

YouTuber FlytPath walks us through the new features of OM4 and using with the MIMO app:

There are a lot more features to aid you in taking videos and photos with the OM 4. Capturing the airsoft action is of course, always better with stabilization made possible by gimbals. Being able to quickly detach the smartphone from the gimbal so you can make and receive calls; check emails, send messages, share photos and videos on social media; and generally other stuff you do on your phone is now very easy, thanks to the OM 4.

The OM 4 is available order at the DJI online shop at US$150.00/ £139.
