Former Operators Help Protect The Rhinos In "Rhino Wars"

Logan

It may not be the most glamorous of missions that any special operations guy will take, but these former operators from the U.S. Navy SEALs and Green Berets are taking up a mission that will help make the Rhinos survive, rather than be wiped out from the face of the earth due to human greed. These veterans will be in action in Discover Channel's "Rhino Wars" which will begin on the 7th of March 2013.

Why have special operations guys to stop poachers? With the increasing demand for Rhino horns especially in the fast growing economies in East Asia, where Rhino horns are used in traditional medicine and as aphrodisiacs, affluent people are willing to pay big money for Rhino horns, especially that they are now getting rare. According to Global Post, the Rhino horn is the "new drug status" especially amongst rich Vietnamese.

Even if scientists do not see any medicinal value in Rhino horns as these are made up with keratin which is the same material in our nails, traditions are hard to overcome and with the big money coming with the demand for Rhino horns, poachers in South Africa are overwhelming park rangers and other security personnel tasked to guarding the Rhinos from their human predators.

Though the best way to stop hunting the Rhinoceros for its horn is to cut-off demand, just like the campaign against shark fins is being waged, Discovery Channel has these SpecOPs guys to help the hapless protectors of the Rhinos which might make good TV. The poachers are armed and are willing to kill park rangers and with the entry of former operators, though even four just four them, would make a difference somehow.

The trailer looks that the former operators will have to call on their training to make an effective campaign against the poachers given the limited resources of the locals. It will be interesting to see how this transpires through the season or seasons (if Discovery Channel likes the ratings). So better check with your local cable operator for the time schedule of this show if Discovery Channel is part of your cable package.
