Just For Kicks: An Airsoft Gun Converted To Fire Laser

Gungho Cowboy

Pew! Pew! Pew! How about that? An airsoft gun that fires off laser beams rather than primitive plastic BBs? One guy who had a burst of creative energy and a lot of time to kill exactly did that. He coverted an airsoft gun to fire laser that can burst balloons and even light-up matches from a distance.

What he did was get a cheap AEG and wired a laser diode from a 12x blu-ray disc burner though he indicates that you can get a laser diode for around 50 bucks. It would be such a waste dismantling a perfectly good blu-ray burner for this project, when you can use it to burn videos, photos, porn, and whatever digital items you have for archiving purposes.

Using  an Aixiz module and glass lens, he then put wired throught the barrel area (hidden by the plastic handguard) and have the laser at the muzzle area. Witn an output 700mW at 405nm, he then goes into a shooting spree, shooting balloons and lighting up matches. The video below shows the mod in action:

Sounds cool, right? Well, as long as you're not pointing and firing at a person, then yes, it would not cause injury, especially to the eyes. You can go using higher wattage to even create more destruction with a laser gun. Just don't go lighting up a whole airsoft team with it, someone might be wearing a flammable gear, especially an ACM one.

It would be great if someone can do a project like that but with a better purpose of putting some realism in firing an airsoft gun. Rather than a laser beam, a simulated muzzle flash that can be done with small LED bulbs. Everytime the trigger is pulled, it emits a strong flash just like in a real gun. A cap gun style is better, but then it's tough to put an airsoft and cap gun together, and the pyro used might ruin the barrel.

Who knows? This guy might have just shown us the future of airsoft --- lasersoft anyone?
