Put that iPod Nano to good Airsoft use

Gungho Cowboy

That is, if your iPod Nano is the 5th generation one which has a video camera included. Being the most popular MP3 player in the world, the iPod is ubiquitous, and with the Nano 5th Generation, you can take videos of your friends in action. If you cannot afford to buy a dedicated helmet camera to capture those airsoft moments, then for just an additional US$35 (US$34.99 to be exact), you can use the iPod Nano 5th Generation as a helmet camera.

Rampant Gear released their Rampant View head strap which has a its front area with a rubber bulk to insert the iPod Nano with its camera facing outward. The bulky front also has an integrated visor if you're not bothered  by it. The iPod Nano 5th generation is one tough bugger so you can take it to the extreme. But if you're iffy about the iPod Nano's back being totally exposed to incoming bbs, you can just take some rubber mat then cut out a portion of it, leaving a small hole for the camera's lens to peek through, tape it to the back of the nano and you protect the rest of the body.

The quality of the iPod Nano's video is good enough at 640 x 480 at 3fps auto focus, but in these days where high definition vidoes are becoming the norm, it's something for you to live with since you're on a budget. But it's much better than other HD videos as its video stabilisation is much better that some of its equivalent dedicated helmet cams. The audio is decent, but the wind noise becomes annoying in the video. You might want to take out the audio out of the video with video editing software, and use some background music for the video before uploading it to any video sharing website. With around 8 to 16 GB, depending on the model of your iPod Nano, you have enough space to store your video.

The Rampant View has a headphone pass through so you can still listen to music when the Nano's installed in the strap. I hate the strap, while it's a non-slip and seems to be hold the whole contraption properly, the big Rampant Gear logo and orange colour are dead giveaways when you're hiding during a skirmish. I just hope that you can use the Rampant View comfortabley without the need for a helmet in order to lessen weight.

When the Rampant View is not in use, you can just remove the iPod Nano and use it as a regular MP3 player. Just imagine the looks of people at you on your way to work and having the helmet strap on you. But if you bike on your way to work, then you can get away with it.

I love the simplicity of this product and you can have a good helmet cam without breaking the bank. You can capture videos of airsoft games and other sporty activities that you do with your iPod Nano hands free and yourself right in the middle of the game. So before you decide to dispose your iPod Nano 5th Generation to get the recently release iPod Nano, take note that the latest one doesn't have a video camera, so you might as well stick with it.

Finally, an Apple product that can have an actual airsoft use, helped by the Rampant View helmet cam strap.
