The ACM Electric C-Mag for MP5 Series

MadDog

WARNING. This is not for the purist and HARCORE milsim enthusiasts. For one the dimensions of this particular magazine is not accurate for the 9mm real steel c-mag, more likely, it resembles the dimensions that of the 5.56 version, secondly the real steel c-mags can only accommodate 100 rounds whereas this airsoft version can hold a massive 3000 BBs! It will definitely violate the limited ammo restriction. However, if it's “FUN-CORE” you are after, then this C-Mag is for you.  Because once you slap this baby into your MP5 AEG I can almost guarantee the inevitable smile on you face.

First impressions

The ACM Electric C-Mag for MP5 series did not come with any box nor instructions on how to use nor did I notice any marking. It did come with a charger and a remote switch. It is plastic all the way. But don't let that disappoint you as the real steel one is not all metal too. As it is plastic, it is rather light when empty. My shake test proved that this C-MAG is solid with no annoying loose parts.

Looking from a posterior perspective, the left drum contains the electronics and the motor assembly, you will find the feeding clip in the middle and the right drum holds your BBs. The switch can be found on the left drum. You have three operational choices sound controlled, OFF (activated by a remote switch) and Auto. You will find the rather small loading port at the rear part of the feeding clip and  I  think most of you who bought this C-Mag have asked yourself “How am I going to fit 3000 BBs through there?” On top of the feeding clip, you will find the lip and a microphone for use in sound control mode. On the right drum you will find the BB pusher and ports for the charger and the remote switch.

The Internals

After charging the batteries, I started filling it up with BBs. I will be honest with you. I lost my patience... I will not spend 30 minutes loading this thing up. It's just plain boring and utterly annoying. So I had to take it down and find a way to make this job easier. In doing so, I had to expose the contents of the left and right drums. Here is what I saw:

The internals are generally clean and well planned unlike the A&K M4 electric box mags I have opened in the past which looked like haphazard student science projects. Each component looks secure. The electronic chip has what appears to be like an integrated circuit and  makes it look uhhrmm! Hi-tech! Opening it also reveals its power source which is a 4x AAA (4.8v) 700mAh Ni-MH cells. The spring powered BB pusher is strong enough and will push BBs till the last few rounds.

The Mod

With a rotary tool, I decided to make a hole at the bottom of the left drum. It must be situated within the compartment when the BB pusher is fully retracted. Besides that,  I also made a little hole, enough for a toothpick to be inserted and hold the BB pusher while I load it with BBs. Now, with the BB pusher fully retracted and held in place, I just literally poured in my BBs with no hassle at all. This procedure might result to a loss space for an approximately 100 BBs. No biggie.

Using the C-Mag

I have this long standing and nagging desire to convert my lowly MP5K into a fearsome support weapon. I know, it will not look nice, fugly even. But after putting the mag in my Kurz (German for “shot”, otherwise the MP5K)I just did not want to take it off any more.... it just looked like the cutest little support weapon there is. I called it “Da WildCock” (uh... no pun intended). Here's a photo:

Using it in manual (OFF mode) with the remote switch is much like the rest of remote controlled mags. When on AUTO mode, it felt like the plastic gears of this mag will break unless I didn't stop squeezing the trigger. I found this of very little use. The last option and my favorite choice is the sound control. The sound control electronics are so reactive that all you need is point and shoot... uh, in this case point and SPRAY! The BBs come out the muzzle almost uninterrupted. The moment a dry fire is sensed, the motor gets activated and pushes more BBs for that covering fire heaven.

The Field Test

Though I planned to use this in CQB games, I couldn't leave it at home when I played woodlands in the last AESOG games in X-Site. It was like a little puppy begging to go to the park. So, I packed it in anyway. Excited, I immediately used it in the first game which is just a warm up game. Sadly, for such a short barrelled weapon, the long range targets just can't be reached. Still, as far as BB feeding is concerned, this C-mag still has to disappoint me.

Next stop CQB games at  Eletrowerkz. I chose to play in a variety night where unlimited ammo is allowed for the obvious reason that I will aim to squeeze my 3000 BBs dry per game. The result can be described in one word AWESOME! Installed to an MP5K, a player will have the advantages of being very mobile with an “endless” supply of BBs available in every squeeze of the trigger. This baby was almost unstoppable, covering fire, full head on assault--- this baby never failed me.

At least for now,  my ACM Electric C-Mag for MP5 series has kept me happy with its performance. Whether it will stand the test of time and “torture” only the future can tell.
