Gungho Cowboy

2014 will be the year when wearable computing will be going into high gear. This means that more devices that can give us more information quickly without us pulling out our smartphones from our pockets and will always be in front of us through Smart Glasses, or be fashionable like Smart Watches and will either be standalone or will have the smartphone as the control centre.

Whilst Smart Watches such as those from Pebble or Samsung or even Sony have dominated the recent conversation, Google Glass has been hogging the headlines in terms of Smart Glasses. As Google Glass is not yet available for everyone due to apps still being developed and thus in a "beta" stage, other vendors such as RECON Instruments and Vuzix are forging ahead in their sales of Smart Glasses. Vuzix in fact will be selling its M100 to the Defence and Security Sector which they think will need the Smart Glasses quickly.

The Vuzix M100 has a 428 x 240 color-LCD but will be not be obtrusive enough to prevent peripheral vision and can work people wearing spectacles. It is a standalone system running android and at its heart is a 1GHz OMAP4430 processor 4GB of storage and 1 GB RAM but can also connect to other android devices that has the compatible version via Wifi or Bluetooth. The storage is expandable with the use of Micro SD cards and it would be great if it can be expanded and battery life would also last at least 24 hours of constant use with batteries easily replaceable unlike the iOS devices where you cannot replace batteries when the juice runs out whilst you're out in the field. It also comes with a 1080p HD camera so you can also do video capture when needed.

As they target the Defence and Security Sector, Vuzix has partnered with Six-15 Technologies (the new name of the Vuzix Tactical Display Group [TDG]) which is focused in developing tactical displays such as the mobile monitor and the Tac Eye Series. Six-15 Technologies will be helping develop the applications that will be required by the sector.

Civilians will still be able to purchase the M100 when it becomes widely available this year. Below is the press release.
