Federal authorities in Boston have dealt a significant blow to the illegal importation of switches and silencers from China, seizing over 350 internet domains used to facilitate this illicit trade. These devices can convert semiautomatic pistols into fully automatic machine guns, posing a grave threat to public safety.

In a way, this might concern airsoft players importing airsoft parts from overseas as authorities will become more strict for airsoft gun products since they are also declared as "toys" but look like real firearms or firearms parts.

In a press release by the Justice Department on 11 September 2024, the investigation, which began in August 2023, involved undercover purchases from the websites to confirm their involvement in selling these prohibited items. The contraband was then shipped from China under false descriptions to government-controlled mailboxes in the United States.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy emphasized the commitment of his office to protecting communities from the dangers of illegal firearms and accessories. He highlighted the seizure of the domains as a crucial step in disrupting the flow of dangerous contraband and holding those involved accountable.

Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Krol underscored the organized effort behind the illegal importation of switches and silencers, noting that HSI has worked diligently to dismantle this network. The agency's cyber investigations are crucial in keeping these deadly devices out of the hands of criminals.

Ketty Larco-Ward, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Boston, emphasized the postal service's commitment to working with law enforcement partners to combat the trafficking of these weapons through the mail. The seizure of over 700 devices, including switches, silencers, firearms, and counterfeit goods, demonstrates the scale of the problem.

The investigation also uncovered the trafficking of counterfeit goods and the unauthorized use of the Glock, Inc. trademark. The company fully cooperated with the government's investigation.

Federal authorities ultimately established probable cause to seize for forfeiture more than 350 domains used in connection with the scheme. Visitors to these websites will now be redirected to a landing page announcing that the domain has been seized.

Seized Domain Names by the DOJ

The successful operation, involving the collaboration of multiple federal and state agencies, sends a strong message to those who attempt to exploit online platforms to traffic in highly lethal firearm parts. For sellers of airsoft guns and gun parts overseas to U.S. based customers, they will need to be more transparent in declaring their goods as for airsoft use.
