Pyramyd Air's Second Campaign Against SB798

PRESS RELEASE:  Warrensville Heights, OH, August 9, 2011 - Pyramyd Air, the world's largest online airgun retailer, is running a second campaign to defeat California SB 798. The original bill, which stipulated that airguns and airsoft guns must be clear or brightly colored instead of black, was withdrawn earlier this year due to public outcry. It has been amended and will soon be before the California General Assembly for a vote.

Pyramyd Air's first campaign included an overwhelmingly successful petition that forced the bill to be withdrawn and amended. The reintroduced bill is still unacceptable to the shooting community because it has the potential to cause widespread confusion, increase unemployment and negatively impact California state revenues.

Senate Bill 798 was originally written and introduced by California legislator Senator Kevin de Leon and dictated that airguns and airsoft guns that bear a resemblance to firearms can no longer be black and must be brightly colored or clear. This would be very dangerous because toy guns are also required by California law to be brightly colored or clear. Additionally, federal law already requires that airsoft guns have a minimum quarter-inch blaze orange muzzle to distinguish them from firearms. Public outcry and industry objections forced Sen. de Leon to withdraw and amend the bill. The amended bill is now being protested by the industry and private citizens because it would let California counties and cities pass laws similar to the original version of SB 798.

If passed, SB 798 would result in a complex, confusing patchwork of laws throughout the state. Gun owners frequently take their guns and travel to ranges and facilities for interaction with other gun owners and for target practice. Legal gun owners would end up driving through areas where laws have been passed that make their black guns illegal...and they'd have no way of knowing it. It's virtually impossible to keep abreast of every law passed in each county and city. Therefore, gun owners legally traveling with a black gun will -- through no fault of their own -- violate city and county laws simply  by driving on public streets to other locations.

Pyramyd Air has created a web page devoted to fighting the amended bill (http://www.pyramydair.com/SB798.shtml) and is asking people to sign their petition and to write directly to their California legislators. The new campaign already has close to 2,000 signatures, with hundreds being added daily.
