H&K developed the UMP to be their next generation submachine gun and the successor of their long standing MP5. They built it with with a space-age polymer body and improved mechanics to better suit their new SMG for the modern operator. They also took a radical departure from the traditional 9mm round and also chambered their UMP for the hard hitting .40 S&W and .45 ACP rounds making it one of the most powerful submachine guns on the planet.

The Umarex UMP is manufactured by S&T with officially licensed Heckler & Kock trademarks. Just like the real steel, it is built with a polymer body which gives this subgun a very manageable weight and excellent maneuverability. The UMP is also fully ambidextrous so if you are a lefty or find yourself transitioning sides a lot you will not have any trouble manipulating any of its controls.

Its design is based on the original STAR UMP so it is fully compatible with STAR or Ares magazines. The battery compartment extends all the way into the cocking tube which allows it to easily accept up to a 9.6v AK Stick battery pack. Inside of the guns polymer body is a metal V3 gearbox with steel gears running on solid 7mm steel bushings. This gearbox features a quick change spring system which enables you unlock a specially designed spring guide and swap out the guns spring through the rear of the gearbox. To access the gearbox you simply have to remove one body pin and the whole lower receiver swings down out of the guns body. S&T also decided not to use the age old trigger contact design and instead fitted their gearbox with a sealed, one piece snap switch just like those found on a CA M249. Even with these unique features the gearbox is still compatible with most aftermarket upgrade parts for its piston, cylinder and gear sets.

When it came to accuracy this compact gun really surprised us by landing every shot from a long full auto burst inside the kill zone of a man sized target from 50 yards away. At the muzzle the UMP was sending .2g BBs downrange in excess of 320 fps and when powered by a 9.6v battery it was pushing out over 950 rounds a minute. While it may be intended primarily for CQB it is more than antiquate for field duty.
