It is a personal defense weapon designed to meet NATO requirements which required an SMG type weapon. The proliferation of cheap but effective bulletproof vests began to render weapons ineffective. In response to this trend, H&K designed the MP7 to penetrate these vests while being small enough to be used in place of a pistol or submachine gun."
